Bring the Sparkle Back to Your Tile
When tile is first installed, it is beautiful, shiny and even easy to clean. Unfortunately, over time, that beautiful tile can become outlined by dingy grout that becomes discolored and stained. Once this discoloration happens, it usually will take more than just elbow grease to get grout back to its original color. However, there are a few tricks that can be used to get that grout and tile looking like new again.
Natural Grout Cleaners
There are several household items that can work as natural cleaning products to get grout clean. Although there are many chemical cleaners on the market, these natural products often work just as well, with less harm to the home and environment.
- Lemon juice. The acidity of lemons is a natural enemy of dirt and grime. Use a liberal amount of lemon juice on grout, allowing the juice to sit on the grout for at least 10 minutes before beginning to scrub them clean.
- Vinegar. Another useful weapon against grimy grout is vinegar. Like lemon, allow the vinegar to sit on the grout for at least 10 minutes. If the grout is very stained, add baking soda to vinegar to make a grout cleaning paste.
- Hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is known for its cleaning power; try using a mixture of half water, half peroxide on dirty grout, allowing it to soak before beginning to scrub.
Professional Grout Cleaning
Even with these great natural products, there is some grout that needs more than lemon juice or vinegar to get it back to looking like new. For tough stains on grout, a professional grout cleaning may be needed to scrub or steam out the grime in between tiles. Commercial cleaning equipment can quickly get grout back to its original color, without needing to spend hours with a toothbrush trying to scrub out all that grout!
