Grout Troubles?
Grout can be very difficult to clean and maintain especially if you don’t regularly service the floors.
Because grout is porous it can and will become discolored and stained due to grime, moisture and dirty mop water. If not cleaned properly grout can hold bacteria, mold and mildew. There are many reasons the grout has become soiled including improper sealing, poor choice in cleaners leaving the grout more susceptible to absorption or sealing over dirty grout and floors.
- Start by using the right products to clean the grout. For the initial deep clean try to avoid products high in potassium and sodium. Acid based cleaner tend to be lower in pH and work well versus higher pH chemical found in many detergents. If the grout is in a restroom be sure to treat the grout with a disinfectant or germicide to kill any existing bacteria prior to sealing.
- Cleaning grout is not an easy task and many retain a trained professional due to the level of difficulty in the project. Scrubbing each line of grout by hand is sometimes necessary.
- Apply chemical liberally and let sit 5-10 minutes before scrubbing with a floor brush. The solvents are designed to release and raise the contaminants to the surface. Use a wet vac to extract water, cleaning agent and contaminants from the floor. Let floor dry completely and apply sealant to the grout as directed by the manufacturer.
For large areas with high traffic there is new equipment that is used with high psi water systems that incorporate heat, pressure and chemical to provide a deep and comprehensive clean. This equipment is extremely effective in grout cleaning. There is also equipment that incorporates floor brushes to loosen the dirt and extract at the same time also providing a deep clean.
Once grout is clean and sealed, regular floor care along with a regular maintenance schedule (annual grout clean is recommended and for high traffic areas quarterly) should help to keep things looking great and protect your floor covering for the long haul!
